Change is Coming
Let me just clear this up before we even begin. I’m not a huge fan of change. That is to say…I don’t like change at all. Even though I know change is inevitable, and yes I know it can even be a good thing, I still dislike it. Although I’m not altogether certain why I dislike it. Perhaps it’s simply because I like being comfortable. I am aware that some people find excitement in change. Like it’s a thrill to be experienced. And I guess that is true. But I have a problem with that too. I have never been a thrill seeker. So…change bothers me.
I found out today that there is a word for people like me. Misoneism. Misoneism, according to Webster’s Dictionary means, “a hatred, fear, or intolerance of innovation or change.” Now, I don’t know if I have this. Like it’s a phobia or something. But it sounds pretty accurate. I don’t like to get new technology. I’d prefer to keep the same cell phone and laptop and never have to replace them. Because even though I generally buy the same brand, there is inevitably something to learn on the new device. Either updated software or operating system. There is always a learning curve and for people like me this can be extremely frustrating.
The reason why this is important, is because change is inevitable. Season’s change. People change. Technology changes. Actually, I can’t think of anything that doesn’t change, outside of God and His word of course. Everything else, change is coming!
The picture above was taken four years ago today. (December 2, 2018). It was the first ever worship service called The Well Maury. The Well is a worship service specifically designed with young adults in mind. Specifically, ages 18-28. Over the past four years we experienced many things doing The Well. We have had to purchase equipment, move to a different venue then the original one, set up and tear down the equipment every night, survive a pandemic, and meet lots of new people. Lots and lots of people.
We have also experienced God in amazing ways. Lives have been touched and changed. Not by The Well but by the Holy Spirit using this ministry to do so. We have seen people go from death to life, spiritually, while being a part of this ministry That is something I will never forget!
But as the saying goes, “all good things must come to an end.” After four years of worshipping together every Sunday night, The Well Maury will have our last worship service on Sunday, December 18, 2022. It is bittersweet for sure, but I am thankful. Not thankful that it is ending. Thankful that we got to experience it and experience God working in the lives of young adults.
And while it is bittersweet, we don’t have to be sad. God is doing a new thing! Just because the worship portion is ending, doesn’t mean our ministry to young adults is over. Far from it! And it definitely doesn’t mean that God is not still working. He is just doing a new thing.
The writer of Ecclesiastes writes, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:” (3:1) God is still God. And He still has plans. Greater plans then we can even imagine. We just must trust Him and surrender to His will. He will not lead us astray. He will not forsake us. Just because this “season” is coming to an end doesn’t mean that God doesn’t have another “season” planned for us. Quite the contrary. He is always working! (Lamentations 3:22)
So, if you are someone like me and do not prefer change either, just be patient and trust God. That’s what I’m trying to do. And remember the words that God spoke to Joshua, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
I cannot wait to see what new thing God is going to do!
